Been a beer drinker for 50 years, beer brewer for 1. Hope to get better results. So far they are mixed.

First thing to do before brewing if using Beersmith is to customize your equipment profile. The profiles that come with the software are largely provided by Beersmith users and reflect their systems and their processes. Even if using the same system there may be minor differences... length of tubing used, method of measuring volume to name a few. The processes you employ while using that same equipment will vary as well. All causing discrepancies with your estimated vs actual numbers.

With all due respect to Brad Smith and his equipment profile tutorials this to me is the very best one out there...

Keep in mind that this won't be the end of the story. You will want to keep accurate measurements and notes during each and every brew session to help you fine tune your profile.

Another suggestion to help you get better results consistently is to pick up a copy of John Palmers book, How To Brew Vol. 4. (Note that earlier volumes contain information that John later corrected and in the case of the use of a secondary fermentation vessel declares outright wrong)
