To re-brew an old recipe, I have habitually copied the old recipe file into the >Recipes>My Recipes folder, renamed the file and amended relevant sections. Recently, the renamed file has continuously lost my updated notes. Today I lost a whole recipe file.
The files and notes amendments are visible in the >Recipes>Archive folder. However, the notes are lost again when copied into >Recipes>My Recipes folder.
I am using BrewSmith on a Win11 PC.

Hi,
Are you possibly using some "unprintable" characters in the notes? For example BeerSmith does not handle emoji's well in the notes field?

"unprintable character" - only keyboard alpha / numeric. I have imported the degree symbol - but I have used this for ages.
An early workaround was to add "testing" as the only text and although saved initially was subsequently lost.
Another workaround was to create a brand new menu with "Testing" as the only text. This was saved and could be opened and closed initially but later it to vanished.
Note that Archive is 100% retained but not my recipe files and file content.
I have also "whitewashed" BeerSmith3.exe in my firewall but this did not help.
My recipe retains 11 years of retained recipes in annual folders.

This is just another hunch but what version are you running under Help->About?

Currently running 3.2.7
As part of my DIY troubleshooting I downloaded the latest version, backed up, deleted, re-installed and recovered from backup. I have also saved and restored the BeerSmith.bsmx file. Neither solved my lost notes problem.
Just checked again (amended date and added a text only note in my recipes file, saved, re-opened to confirm changes, closed file, closed BeerSmith) Reopened BeerSmith 5 minutes later to find changes still in archive but lost in my recipes file.
I keep getting the "BeerSmith: Another copy may be running" warning screen on starting.

Another update.

I have again uninstalled BS3 and renamed the C:/User/"username"/AppData/Roaming/BeerSmith3 directory.
I have again installed BeerSmith 3.2.7 but this time I did not restore my old data from backup.

Now, all my previous brewing data is not in the new program but it works 😀 ie I can now create, amend and save recipes without losing the new recipe file and/or any new amendments.

Remember, previously amendments (both new recipes and amendments) were always retained in the App's BeerSmith/Recipes/Archive directory but lost from the App's BeerSmith/Recipes directory.

Does this help with identifying my earlier problem ?

The follow on question is how can I sanitize my old data files and restore my data ?.

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks!
I'm not sure how this would affect the data unless possibly you had a corrupted recipe file. You can try the following though:
- Back up what you have (just in case) using File->Export All from My Recipes view
- Open your old Recipe.bsmx file in BeerSmith using File->Open - this will show it in a new tab
- You can copy/paste items as needed from the open file tab to My Recipes
- Then close everything out and close BeerSmith
- After restarting run your test again

This should get much better next year when I release BeerSmith 4 which has a SQL storage system and gets away from the old BSMX/XML files
