Greetings Brad and Beersmith team and community,

I am a fan of the software which I have been using throughout my short-ish (6 years) home brewing career. The software is great when it is running!

I am on a Macbook Pro, OS Monterey 12.7.6. However, this problem with Beersmith has plagued me ever since I purchased the software.

I typically use the software as follows - I find a recipe in Zymergy magazine, or in a local HBS, and then create a new recipe, input the ingredients, and then input my measurements as I go along.

I haven't brewed a batch since July of last year (2024) and today I am preparing for my next batch tomorrow.

The crashing (BS3 software crashing, not to be confused with cold crashing! ;) ) is happening now so frequently as to render the software unusable. The following things seem to trigger the crash:

  • Navigating using the mouse pointer between Design, Starter, Mash, Session, Notes etc.
  • Inputting fermentables, hops and yeast
  • Navigating between My Recipes
  • Clicking the Save icon
    • I had to re-save after 4 times of it crashing before I was able to persist my recipe between crash sessions
Brad and team, please advise - I am desperate to get the application functioning again, and to have it continue to stay open throughout my brew day!

Many thanks,

-Mark

Mark,
The first thing to check is what version of BeerSmith you are running which you can see by going to BeerSmith->About.

If you are not on version 3.2.7 at least I would just download and install the latest version from the main download page at BeerSmith.com and that should resolve the crashing. Note that BeerSmith does not yet support dark mode, so you will need to run in light mode.

Hey Brad, thanks for the reply!

I did DL and tried to install the latest version, but when BS restarted it is still showing the older version. Do I have to deliberately un-install BS and then re-install using the latest downloaded package?

In the meantime, I discovered and used your web version for brew day 🍻

If it is showing your older version then very likely you have the old version installed somewhere else and then a shortcut to it on the desktop. Try removing the desktop shortcut and running the new version you installed directly from the Applications directory (where you put it). It should then show the new version under Help->About
