Are the White Labs yeasts included in the update the new PurePitch Next Gen Homebrew? If so, the Age Rate is set at 10%, but White Labs promotes 94.9% cell viability after 6 months. Will this be reconciled in a future update?
I will revisit this. I exchanged viability data with the techs at White Labs sometime back. I don't think they achieved 94% at 6 months but I will check again and update it if needed.
Thank you. White Labs QC reports show best buy date is about 5 months after the QC release date and lists viability as >95%. All the strains I've been using have been about the same. See attached. FYI, I pretty much use White Labs exclusively, which is why I'm asking.
Also, thank you so much for the work you put into this. I absolutely rely on BeerSmith, and have for the last 15 years or so. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to BeerSmith 4.
Not to argue too much but the viability in the report you cite is after QC checks so that is as the yeast goes out the door.
I actually found my email thread from last year which is a discussion I had directly with Chris White as well as some of his yeast techs. The model he sent me corresponds to a loss of approximately 5%/month for purepitch or around 73% viability remaining at 6 months. This contrasts with most other yeast providers who lose approximately half their viability in 6 months.
As a result I will go in and update the viability numbers on the addons. After discussions with other yeast vendors I think their 21% age rate is probably too high given modern methods. They are closer to 50% viability at 6 months which corresponds to a value of around 10-11% (or use 5% for PurePitch).
Note for the yeast starter tool you can change the default viability numbers under Options->Yeast Starter. Obviously the various viability numbers can also be set for each yeast, but I will update those shortly.
No argument here. I happily defer to your knowledge and expertise. Looking forward to the updated yeasts. I had been adding them manually once the PurePitch packaging came out and had been adjusting the viability numbers as well based on their QC reports.
UPDATE: I just updated the viability numbers for all of the liquid yeasts to reflect newer estimates. These are automatically installed on the web version but if you have the desktop version and want the improved viability numbers you should uninstall and then install these updates again:
