Total Water Needed too high

Hi,

I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I am doing a very simple extract recipe for 3.5 litres batch size with the following:
500g Light DME
10g Simcoe boiled 15 mins
18g Simcoe steep while cooling
US05 yeast

Now, Beersmith is telling me my total water needed for the above is 8.66l which is way too much. When I look at the brew steps after telling me I need 8.66l total water, when removing the steeping grains (if using) I should add water to achieve a boil volume of 4.11l. Which sounds much more like the figure I need to total water needed.

So really I am wondering where I am going wrong, how have I managed to get such a high total water needed. It may not be important right now but in the future it may mess things up royally!

Cheers!
