I have some liquid yeast that is 6 months old, can I still use it?

If it has been transported and stored under reasonable conditions the viability should be about 25%. With an adequate starter it should be OK. Either way, a starter is a good way to proof it.

OK, but I have never done a starter before - where can I get the info on doing this??

You can start here:  http://beersmith.com/blog/2008/04/01/making-a-yeast-starter-for-your-home-brew-beer/
