I have several hop vines that I'd love to use for beer production. However, I have no idea as to what variety they are. Is there any way to tell?

I remember a Boston based IPA that was barreled in oak. It was marvelous. Do you know its name and who might make an equally woody ale today??

[...] A small basket of spiced popcorn was delivered to our table as a welcome. It was a nice little unexpected treat to help get the meal, and my palate, started. Hardly able to focus on the spiced hors d’oeuvres, I was anxious to open the drink menu and ready to dive in to a glass of one of my favorite American craft brews. The beer selection was definitely reputable, but I was hoping for a few more surprises. The drink menu was heavier on the bourbon and scotch variety (also becoming increasingly more popular, note to self: ‘develop a taste for scotch’). I settled on the Smuttynose I.P.A ($6/bottle), a hoppy and darker than average India Pale Ale.
No - though beers brewed in the early 1700's were pre-industrial revolution and typically were ales (lagers came in in the 1800's), often made with brown malt as true pale malt was not yet available. Often the malts were dried over wood fires, leaving a smoky taste. Often other spices were used instead of hops. I'm not sure you would enjoy a truly authentic beer of the age, but probably something like a continental brown colored ale would be reasonably close.

Any suggestions where to find a recipe for German beer popular in the early 1700's? We are celebrating Bach's 325th birthday coming up in March, and wanted to follow it up with some home-brewed beer.

Thanks,
 Mark Seevers
